At risk of sounding foolish and uncultured, what’s an “apostille” service?

It took me several days to fathom this out but it’s a service that provides ‘apostille’ verification of academic credentials now required by Korean immigration for E2 visas. See http://anyonghasayo.wordpress.com/2007/11/27/e2-visa-korea-update/ (it’s not straighforward!).
